Abstract

The interest Americans have expressed in the art of reading perhaps stems back to their original formulation of the goals of education, when reading took its place as the first of the "3 R's." Authorities today in the field of education are still agreed that reading should be considered as basic to all forms of education. The Iowa State Course of Study in English suggests that, "Reading is the chief means of gaining an education and of continuing the education after formal schooling has ended."1
