Abstract

Domestic violence is receiving increasing attention in the media, communities, and classrooms across the country. It is suggested a minimum of from 2 to 3 million women are assaulted by male partners each year in the United States. More than 3 out of every 100 or 1.8 million women were severely assaulted as they were kicked, punched, choked, beaten, threatened with a knife or gun, or had a knife or gun used on them. The contribution of alcohol or drugs to this phenomena is frequently acknowledged but rarely examined in detail. This paper reports the incidence of domestic violence among a group of lowa women in a substance abuse treatment center. Domestic violence poses serious threats to individuals, families, communities, and society at large. Much of the research on violence and alcohol has traditionally focused on males as the perpetrator. Women in an Iowa treatment center for substance abuse completed a survey regarding their experiences with domestic violence. More than half of the subjects reported experiences of domestic violence. The need to assess and treat both problems concurrently are discussed. Treatment and assessment guidelines are identified along with factors that may serve as barriers to treatment providers in identifying violence as a problem in chemically dependent women.
