Abstract

This abstract offers a deeply personal exploration into the making of a personal essay film centered around the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi in Rwanda. Motivated by a familial connection to the tragic events and a long period of avoidance, I am finally ready to confront this harrowing chapter of my family’s history. Delving into the project's scope, I detail its thematic focus, visual elements, and the journey that led to its inception.

The literature review serves as a foundational exploration of Rwanda's history, particularly delving into the events surrounding the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Additionally, it examines the media coverage of the atrocities both during and after the genocide. Drawing from a diverse array of sources, including documentaries and scholarly works, I sought to ground my creative vision within the broader context of essay filmmaking.

Navigating through obstacles such as talking to people who have not healed enough to be able to talk about what happened in 1994, bureaucratic hurdles, and concerns over political implications, I found myself compelled to adopt a personal essay film approach over a more analytical documentary style. Despite these challenges, the journey has been one of profound revelation and introspection. As I reflect on the process thus far, I am driven by a desire to preserve the memory of the past for future generations.
