Abstract
"Shaking Hands" is an original short story which explores the culture of competition in middle America. The first person narrator shares an account of two opposing coaches striving to impose their respective wills on the referee of a youth soccer game. This dark comedy highlights the elusive nature of morality, and the often inconsistent relationship between ego and justice.
