Abstract
The purpose of the professional development plan is to provide the Department of Residence Life staff, at the University of Northern Iowa, with a tool to help professionals meet their goals and learning outcomes. At the start of the 2014-2015 academic year, professionals in the department were asked to complete a survey designed to evaluate the developmental opportunities in the Department of Residence, at the University of Northern Iowa, and outside of the University. The survey also provided professionals with an opportunity to indicate various methods for professional development, which they believed would be effective avenues for discussing various professional development topics. The assessment, along with professional competencies and student developmental theories, were then utilized to create the professional development plan.
The plan includes the mission and vision of the department, departmental committees, professional associations and conferences. The plan also features ten professional competency areas for student affairs practitioners from College Student Educators International (ACPA) and Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA). As part of the plan, professionals are asked to select three or four of the competencies listed, and reflect on how they would like to improve on these particular competencies throughout the year. Professionals must then identify the goals and learning outcomes they would like to achieve within each competency, and the action items they will take in order to accomplish their goals.
