Abstract

The Study Group on the Conditions of Excellence in American Higher Education (1984) charged colleges and universities with too often treating students as passive learners who are not fully engaged in realizing their learning potential. Study Group recommendations have been elaborated by Astin (1985) in a theory of student development that portrays active involvement in learning as the essential factor. Apparently, many higher education institutions have responded to these charges and recommendations by developing and implementing new approaches to foster active learning in and outside of classrooms (Gaff, 1991).
