Abstract
A pattern-based approach to programming instruction and its implications was discussed. Using patterning was found to provide an alternative focus for instruction and was suggested to allow for reduced class attention on syntax. It was suggested that specific examples of subpatterns should be used to develop an understanding. During the instructional development, another suggestion to teach the subpatterns as examples of the general pattern, each requiring some modification, was also offered.
