Abstract

The Nickel Lake Macrodike (NLMD) is a geologic feature that is about 1 km wide and 5 km long. NLMD is similar in age to the Duluth Complex since both originate from the same geologic event, the Midcontinent Rift. The Midcontinent System extends from Kansas to Michigan and formed 1.1 Ga. NLMD was first mapped in 2006 by Dean Peterson et al. and has had other projects done on it in the past. One such project is a study in the magnetism done by master's student Finnes in 2012. There are other intrusions in this area that are of interest due to similar geochemistry. The Bathtub intrusion is to the south of the NLMD between the Partridge River intrusions and South Kawishiwi intrusion. NLMD and Bathtub both have olivine present which brings potential for chemical comparison. Within the Bathtub intrusion, it was determined that multiphase solid inclusions were present in the olivine. This means that there were multiple instances of fluid inclusion during the growth of the olivine crystals. There were also other minerals studied, like apatite, that also showed evidence of fluid inclusions. Since the Bathtub intrusion is so close to the NLMD, there is a chance that there will be evidence of fluid inclusions in the olivine samples collected for this project. If both features can be compared for similarities, it can open the door to more knowledge of the early history of the NLMD.
