Abstract
When I first decided in February, 1981 to retire from the position of Executive Director after 16 years, it was purely an intellectual statement, devoid of the consciousness of separation that would eventually take place. The Annual Meeting of 1983 at Luther College brought the reality of the termination vividly to my consciousness, and the many tributes that I received in person and by letter reminded me of just how long 16 years really is. The years since 1967 have provided a constantly changing panorama of faces, personalities, and events that have moved the Academy along toward greater effectiveness and prestige. I appreciate the opportunity to express my "thoughts on retirement" in writing, at the invitation of the Board of Directors and the Editors of the Proceedings.
