Abstract
Stipa robusta (Vasey) Scribn. and Stipa viridula Trin. have previously been distinguished on the basis of overlapping quantitative characters, which often are inadequate for identification. Recent chromosome counts had not been made for either species. I have distinguished several effective diagnostic characters, including palea length, shape and pubescence, ratio of lemma length to width, ratio of palea length to lemma length, and panicle density. The most reliable character is palea length.
