Abstract
Beadle and Tatum (1945) irradiated bread mold fungus, Neurospora spores, with X-ray and isolated biochemical mutants by their inability to grow in minimal medium. They identified the defective pathways by finding a particular amino acid, vitamin, or nucleotide which, being added to the medium, remedied the defect.
