The Cover: The background of leaf skeletons and the insert showing students in action sets the biological theme of this issue. In the past decade an up-to-date biology course has evolved with emphasis upon inquiry, observation and problem solving about such important biological processes as the origin of life, evolution, reproduction and development, genetics, and high level organization of living things. No longer is the formaldehyde frog or butterfly collection held in such high esteem. Stress upon memorization and terms has given way to thinking and doing-especially in the laboratory. Mary Moore and Linda Burkholter, Ottumwa High School biology students, have traced the pathway of Needham, Spallenzani, Pasteur, and other great biologists of the past by conducting and critically analyzing laboratory work.
