The Cover: The models on the cover illustrate the seven basic structures of silicon-oxygen tetrahedra of the silicates. In these models ping pong balls represent the oxygen atoms and beads, which are not visible because of size, represent the silicon atoms. Silicates are important because they constitute the largest part of the earth's crust.
