Abstract
According to "The Merriam-Webster 'Funky' Pocket Dictionary" the definition of the word Extemporaneous is "not planned beforehand while the word Speaking is defined as "making known one's thoughts, feelings, or opinions in words." By practical definition, an extemp speech consists of three points of analysis encompassed by an introduction and conclusion. There are several requisites that are necessary before a speech is considered an individual events extemporaneous speech. In their book, Coaching and Directing Forensics, Kloff and Lahman give the first requisite of an extemporaneous speech, that it must be a speech prepared in advance but neither written out nor memorized. The student giving an extemporaneous speech at an individual events contest will be required to select a specific topic from a "draw" at the beginning of the contest. The student will then be given an allotted amount of time to prepare his speech.
