Abstract
It is a common place today to hear two individual speech events' coaches debating the question of what constitutes "oral interpretation.” This debate has continued to rage for many years, and with its continuance comes confusion not only for the coach and his student performer, but also for the novice judge (and probably many experienced judges) in these individual events tournaments and festivals. Now, if people simply want to debate this issue and don't care whether or not they arrive at some solution to the dilemma, this paper would be in vain, and I need not address myself to this problem, but I submit that these people do want something done about the situation. The real problem is that no one has touched that one sensitive nerve that will allow everyone to "go along with the program" as the modern phrase goes, or a solution has not been pushed enough to make people try it to see if it will work.
