Abstract
The current study explores how coverage of U.S. Supreme Court nominee hearings has changed during the past three decades. Game framing is argued to be seeping its way from purely political coverage into other types of news coverage. Changes in hearing characteristics were examined across time by examining several newspapers and Supreme Court nominee hearings from William H. Rehnquist through Elena Kagan. Findings suggested coverage of nominee hearings is increasingly game framed, thus nominee hearing news coverage is increasingly presented in terms of political strategy and posturing. Normative implications of game framing of Supreme Court hearings are discussed.
