Abstract
Regardless of institution type, those already employed as tenure-line college professors have experienced the application and interview processes and, ultimately, succeeded in landing their jobs. But if you don't have such a position, what type of institution will hire you? Indeed, professorial roles of teaching-based and research-based institutions can drastically differ. Securing employment at one or the other not only requires strong qualifications, but also an understanding of varying institutional needs. As a veteran of small college teaching, I've served on a number of search committees. With a sense of sadness, I've witnessed many prospective college professors fresh out of graduate school applying for faculty positions without any idea of what these small, teaching-based liberal arts colleges are looking for. This essay is my desire to share my experiences and attempt to help new Ph.D.s understand the process and enhance their opportunities for academic employment at a small liberal arts college.
