Abstract
A symbolic interactionist perspective is used to explore employee perceptions of everyday emotion in supervisor and coworker relationships. Respondents presented images of emotional behaviors that varied by the positive or negative nature of the experience and the consistency of the emotional episode within the overall relationship. Results indicate that employees keep a power differential intact in their emotion images of supervisors regardless of relationship quality. In contrast, images of coworkers revealed a sense of equality regardless of relationship quality. Accounts of negative emotional episodes that were inconsistent with normally positive supervisor and coworker relationships were also explained in terms of power differentials.
