Abstract
The violent episodes of September 11th were occasions where visual domains dominated, helping to shape the interpretation of events as an "Attack on America." An examination of the depictive rhetoric used by political cartoonists to place 9/11 in larger interpretive frame works reveals developing narratives of national unity, heroism, and patriotic sacrifice that reflect and contribute to a nationalistic ethos and a nostalgia for a mythic interpretation of terrorist acts as acts of war. The role of editorial cartoons in the construction and maintenance of social and political values is underscored.
