Abstract
Students in an introductory communication class explored the communicative roots of 9/11 by engaging in a deliberative discussion process. With the assistance of guest experts the instructors provided the students with background information on 1) the causes of violence and terrorism; 2) the nature of sacrifice and care, 3) the coverage of crisis in journalism, 4) the democratic theory of freedom of speech, and 5) the nature of heroism and leadership. Building on this knowledge base, the instructors taught the students to engage in a process of deliberation: question and problem definition, problem analysis, idea development, and discussion leadership to enable them to formulate conclusions about communication and the complex events of 9/11.
