Abstract
This study identifies communication techniques (channels) being employed more now, compared to before the September 11 attacks, among convention and visitors bureau (CVB) managers. Two frameworks were used as the basis for the study: the situational theory, developed by Grunig (1978, 1979a); and the theoretical underpinnings of McLuhan's (1964, 1967) critical-cultural perspective "the medium is the message," positing that the channel itself makes its own contribution to the communication process. Results (n = 184) indicate that since the attacks, CVB managers are using the Internet and PR/media relations tactics more frequently and advertising tactics less frequently.
