Abstract

Goal: Students will develop a greater understanding of the relational and task aspects of group development and interaction processes as they teach communication skills to children in the primary grades.

In a seminar on service learning, Communication Education Outreach/ Service Learning, at the 1999 NCA Institute for Faculty Development at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, I developed an assignment in which students in a small group communication class would teach communication skills to elementary school children. Facilitator Ann Q. Staton of the University of Washington distinguished between "volunteerism," as a means of contributing to a community's welfare, and "service learning," where students teach knowledge and skills from their area of expertise to others.
