Abstract
For a communication instructor, evaluating speech performance can be a difficult exercise given the temporal nature of the performance. With the advent of available and cost efficient video recording technology, though, instructors have been able to replay the performance to increase the number of performance cues to which they can attend and hence the validity of the evaluation. Some evaluators choose not to employ this technology, due to the cumbersome nature of the record/search/play processes and the ensuing problem of coordinating the tape with the written evaluation. In this paper, we offer a solution to these problems using multimedia computer technology. Here we present an evaluation process we term digitization. Origins and design of the process are described and the first experiment with it at Waubonsee Community College is detailed.
