Abstract
Computer-mediated environments raise serious ethical questions for online researchers because research can occur without informing the participants under observation. This article describes a variety of ethical problems encountered by the author during her five years of online research. Additionally, it discusses the advantages and disadvantages of a number of ethical guidelines that have been applied to online research.
