Abstract
The environment of higher education that Professor Antczak describes in his essay "Mission of Learning" is not unique to public institutions. Boards of Trustees and alumni of major privates, such as the University of Notre Dame, have been asking some of the tough questions posed by state legislators. At the same time, leaders of the institution and most of its faculty subscribe to the ideal of becoming an ever more significant research institution, however that is to be measured. Through all of this debate about our future, excellence in teaching remains one of the major commitments of the University. Hence, like our colleagues in higher education everywhere, we are continually looking for ways both to balance the demands of teaching and research, and to improve the quality of teaching generally. Professor Antczak's invitation to dialogue on the subject is certainly timely.
