Abstract
I am pleased to be able to respond to Fred Antczak's "A Mission of Leaming: Twenty-two Suggestions for Reducing the Tension between Teaching and Research at the Public Research University." This little essay distills the observations, advice, and wisdom of a group of scholars at the University of Iowa who obviously care a great deal about the current condition and the future of the academy and of their institution. The ongoing dialogue between these Iowa scholars is, as we all know, a local version of discussions all across the academy and involving us increasingly in pointed exchanges within the public sphere about our mission and future.
