Abstract

George Brinton McClellan was one of the most controversial figures in American military history. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 3, 1826. He attended local preparatory schools and for a short time the University of Pennsylvania but entered West Point in 1842 (age 16). He graduated in 1846, second in a class of fifty-nine which contributed twenty general officers to the Union and Confederate armies. His early army career included service in the Army Corps of Engineers, three years as an instructor at West Point, a Red River expedition, and study of European Armies in the Crimean war.
