Abstract

That divorce is on the rise is a well known fact. Also well documented is the rise in single parent households due to divorce and other factors. Although several researchers have studied the effects of divorce upon children (Hetherington, Stanley-Hagan & Anderson, 1989; Tschann, Johnston, Kline, & Wallerstein, 1989), there have been few studies of the naturally occurring interaction between single parents and their children. This is no longer acceptable, not only because of the developing clarity of the work on divorce and single parent families, but also because of recent developments in methodology that make it possible to learn about daily interaction (Rochester Interaction Record or RIR; Wheeler, Reis & Nezlek, 1983) and to record communication (Iowa Communication Record or ICR; Duck & Rutt, 1988). The present paper is an attempt to correct this omission.
