Abstract
Every year when a new crop of graduate students enters Iowa and I get them in my Introduction to Research class, I try to stress one thing--education is not a one-way street. There are responsibilities that come with citizenship in an intellectual community. A responsible citizen cannot be one who simply takes; a responsible citizen must also give. No matter how brilliant a student might be, no matter how much knowledge that student accumulates, if the rest of us do not learn anything from her or him, that student is a failure in my eyes.
