Abstract

My purpose in this essay is to consider the contemporary role of rhetoric in this age of information, this decade of the media. I shall be describing the thinking that has led to a course in applied rhetoric, specifically, the development of an academic course which aims at preparing students to write speeches for other people. The first question is: Is there a demand for speech writers? We recall that lographers existed in classical Greece. We also know that lography was not a highly respected position. Remember the vehemence with which Isocrates denied ever having been a speech writer!
