Abstract
Communication apprehension (CA) is defined by James Mccroskey as, "a broad based, personality-type characteristic that is characterized by withdrawal from, and avoidance of communication, as well as feelings of discomfort and tension while communicating." Phillips describes several scenes of students in basic speaking courses being moved to the point of nausea at the prospect of giving a speech. In one case a suicide is even linked to the student's speech assignment the next day. Persons with communication apprehension often express lower self-esteem, lack trust in others, and have extreme difficulty communicating personal problems. This fear of communicating often continues throughout the individuals life.
