Abstract
I have several thoughts about Mr. Brandstetter's concerns to share. First, I was lucky - El Dorado, Kansas, was lucky - the high school debate coach was one of the first persons to seek me out when I arrived as a first year teacher. He promised me a steak dinner if I introduced debate to my 7th graders. This type cooperation and early indoctrination may particularly account for the strong debate programs in Kansas schools. Iowa speech and drama directors might take a similar tack in their local junior high schools.
