Abstract
Communication scholars are increasingly viewing communicative behavior within interactions as functioning to indicate the structure of the interaction. This focus suggests that participants' behavior within an interaction is the best descriptor of the interaction. Consistent with this focus is the emphasis on developing category systems for the description of communication behavior within particular types of situations. Such systems gain their validity from their relationship with existing theory and their ability to accurately describe communicative behavior. This paper will attempt to describe a category system for the analysis of communicative behavior in conflict situations.
