Abstract
Official recognition of children as a legitimate audience for theatre is a relatively recent development. Although the first performance in the first known theatre for children took place in 1784 in Paris, France, the first significant theatre for children in the United States wasn't established until 1903. Today, children's theatre productions are common at the college and community theatre levels. Even high schools are getting into the act. The high school director who has never done a children's show should give it some thought, for an experience in children's theatre can provide great rewards for the director, the students, and the child audience.
