Abstract
Another speech fundamentals textbook? You bet! And this one definitely merits consideration as a teacher resource or for class adoption. Most broad-based fundamentals texts (and courses) fail in one of two areas: (1) balance in the coverage of different areas of communication with a resulting over-emphasis of one area (such as public speaking) to the neglect of other areas (such as small groups or interpersonal communication) or (2) coverage of one area fails to include the key material on that subject. Pearson and Nelson demonstrate a remarkable ability to isolate the essentials of each subject and to combine them into a book which reflects a healthy, balanced treatment of the communication process. The authors succeed in their attempt to create a skills-oriented book strongly grounded in theory. Based upon relevant classic and recent research findings, the discussion of theoretical concepts presents clear implications for behavioral applications.
