Abstract

In the Spirit Lake Schools we feel that the Internet, or National Information Infrastructure (NII), will be a tool used to solve problems. Rather than teach a course on the NII, schools will include this tool, as any other, to gain information. Our goals will be to integrate the NII into the curriculum prescribed, to empower our students to choose the best tool for their needs and to provide efficient use of the available tools.

Integration of the NII must start with teachers. To involve teachers effectively, the first step is to acquire the best software to make the use of the NII as smooth and effortless as possible at implementation. Mosaic, in one of its many forms, is the Internet and is free. Currently, according to Internet users, it is the most user friendly and has a small learning curve. Teacher workshops during the summer would be ideal. Budgetary constraints without grant supplements would make this a dream, not a reality. Workshops and inservice training will be a mandatory requirement, not only to learn to use NII, but to see how it will change what and how we teach. This is not a new tool for performing old tasks.
