Abstract
At first glance the question, VISION/PURPOSE: HOW WILL THE INTERNET CHANGE THE FOCUS OF SCHOOLS? seemed a fairly simple question. But as we examined it more closely we discovered complexity and ambiguity. What was our question really asking?
Vision and Purpose were manageable. What was our vision of what the Internet will be and for what purpose will it be put to use?
It is clear that the Internet will have the potential to change both the content of what we teach as well as the style of delivery, but the question asked something different. How will the Internet change the "focus" of schools? On first examination, we thought that perhaps the question was asking how will the Internet change what the main task of the institution of a school is? Will the Internet cause schools to not only do things differently, but to fundamentally change what schools are supposed to do?
The question then became what is the "focus" of schools now? Will and should this focus change in 10 or 20 years, especially as a consequence of the existence and use of the Internet?
