Abstract
The concept of "readiness" has a long history within the realm of developmental psychology and an almost equally long history within the realm of education. This concept can be traced to the early work of Arnold Gesell and his colleagues who collected extensive data on the developmental advances of children (Gesell & Ilg, 1949). Gesell placed heavy emphasis on the role of biological factors including genetics in determining the rate at which individual children progressed through a universal and hierarchical set of developmental milestones. The environment, provided it fell within the extremely wide range of normal environments, played little role in development.
