Abstract
The relationship that exists between the superintendent and the members of a board of education is so dramatically important that it affects the philosophy, direction, and inner workings of the district. Obviously, the tone of that relationship varies somewhat from issue to issue and from circumstance to circumstance. Too, the relationship that exists between individual board members and the superintendent varies from one person to another. Whenever personalities are involved, that is the case. But for the most part, the relationship between a superintendent and his or her board as a whole is fairly static from one year to the next. In fact, it tends to be a relationship that one can describe-amicable or antagonistic, trusting or suspicious, cooperative or territorial.
