Abstract

A vision is a clear image of where we want to be. Research indicates that having a clear, compelling vision is a key characteristic of effective schools. However, it appears very few Iowa school districts have developed written visions used by everyone to create better futures for students. We believe:

1. Every school district should build a vision with the main focus on what students need to be prepared for in the future. 2. The district vision should: make a difference, help determine priorities, help set high expectations, encourage groups to plan together for continuous school improvement, motivate individuals who internalize the vision, and work to make it a reality. 3. The vision should be shared, developed, and implemented collaboratively. Committed individuals and groups each contribute to and share responsibility for the vision. 4. Communication is vital at every step in building, sharing, and living out a vision. 5. A positive climate which encourages risk taking, allows for failure, and celebrates success should be nurtured. 6. Students must share in the responsibility for their own education in accordance with the vision.

In an effort to set up every district to succeed, our team compiled suggestions for how to build a shared vision, and how boards and superintendents each can contribute to the process.
