Abstract
An Hour and a Half from Nowhere is a collection of fantasy short stories set in and around a fictional Iowa town called Elder Grove. The fantastical element within these stories purposely reflects essential elements of Iowa life. Some of these elements are more physical, like the weather or the corn in the fields. Others, however, focus on the more insubstantial aspects of Iowa, like family and a close-knit community. By taking these fundamental pieces of being Iowan and turning them into something magical, I am able to exaggerate the good and bad parts of them, and thus raise questions about what being Iowan really means.
