Abstract
Triumphing over critics’ scepticism, Disney has become a major force in the musical theatre industry since premiering a live stage adaptation of its animated musical Beauty and the Beast in 1994. Partnering with the city of New York in the redevelopment of 42nd Street, Disney restored the historic New Amsterdam Theatre. The corporation has also been a leader in developing a family audience for Broadway theatre. Disney’s Broadway ventures based on its film properties have included commercial failures such as Tarzan (2006) and successes like The Lion King (1997) and Newsies (2012).
