Abstract
Cutting fluids have a significant role in the machining process, enhancing the shop productivity, tool life, and quality of the machined part. However, cutting fluids degrade with use over time and eventually require disposal. With stringent environmental regulations across the world, the disposal of used cutting fluids has become difficult. The treatment and disposal costs of cutting fluids amount to a major portion of the machining costs. 1 Further, the addition of extreme-pressure (EP) additives, biocides, and other substances to cutting fluids is sometimes discouraged because of their effect on the environment. Due to the limitations of cutting fluids, various alternatives are being explored.
