Abstract
This chapter outlines the history and theory of service-learning pedagogy and links it with environment-behaviour concepts and theories. It also makes a case for service-learning as an essential component of preparing students for the interior design professions. The chapter discusses the importance of community engagement, how it is related to interior design pedagogy and learning strategies on user preferences and interactions on design, and what it means from a professional standpoint. Using examples from practicing interior design professionals who are currently working in community-engaged practices, the chapter illustrates best practices along with the scope and opportunities for future engagement that mutually benefits future communities and future designers. Additionally, the chapter explores the role of current educational standards and curriculum accreditation such as WELL, CIDA to discuss how they align with service-learning pedagogy.
