Abstract
Scratching with vinyl is a creative musical art form that involves manually manipulating a record on a turntable to produce rhythmic and expressive sounds. Originating in New York City during the 1970s, scratching became one of the foundational techniques of hip-hop DJing and has since evolved into a recognized musical skill. This chapter, Beginning Scratching, introduces educators and students to the essential tools and foundational techniques needed to start scratching, including the baby scratch, drop scratch, and forward scratch. With step-by-step instructions and links to video demonstrations, this chapter provides accessible guidance for developing basic turntablism skills in educational settings, promoting creativity, musical exploration, and student engagement through popular music practices.
