Abstract

This introduction to Cultural Representations of Queer Aging in Spain examines the intersections of aging studies and queer theory, exploring how these disciplines illuminate the double marginalization faced by older LGBTQIA+ individuals. While societal narratives often depict aging as decline and queerness as incompatible with older age, this anthology challenges such tropes, advocating for nuanced representations. Drawing on Spanish literature, cinema, and graphic novels, the collection reveals both the struggles and the joys of queer aging. The introduction contextualizes the anthology within aging studies, exploring concepts like “successful aging” and “affirmative old age,” and within queer theory, highlighting fluid identities and temporalities. By addressing underrepresentation and stereotypes, the anthology expands on topics including chosen families, intergenerational connections, and alternative narratives of legacy. This foundational chapter establishes a framework for analyzing the unique challenges and transformative possibilities of queer aging in Spain.
