Abstract
Literacy, an important skill for today's changing world, has often been ignored for adults with developmental disability thereby severely restricting their vocational and independent living options. As part of a two year project, in which computer skills training was provided to individuals with mild to moderate cognitive disabilities, individuals ranging in age from 24-42 were assessed to determine their current literacy level. Presented in this article is the functional assessment developed through Project COMPUTE that incorporated disability-specific adaptations tied to instruction, as well as consumers' vocational and independent living goals. An assessment package that consisted of four components is presented: a reading behavior questionnaire; an informal reading inventory; a writing sample; and a situational literacy assessment. Brief instructional suggestions are offered.
