Abstract
Photoemission from the surface charge density wave (CDW) system Sn/Ge(111) yields a surprisingly broad Sn core level line shape at room temperature. Our study shows that it consists of three components, one associated with the normal phase and the other two associated with the CDW phase. While only the CDW phase is observed at low temperatures, both phases are present at room temperature. This is due to a 2% defect population within the Sn layer, giving rise to a remnant CDW phase above the transition temperature. © 1999 The American Physical Society.
