Abstract

The mitochondrial-DNA (mtDNA) phytogeny of eight species of Peromyscus was investigated using restriction-site analysis with 13 hexanucleotide-specific restriction enzymes. Wagner, Dollo, and generalized parsimony analyses were conducted to determine how robust proposed relationships are to different phylogenetic assumptions. Although the different analyses predicted somewhat different mtDNA phytogenies, certain relationships seem clear. P. leucopus does not seem to be closely related to taxa of the boylii and truei species groups. P. attwateri, P. difficilis, and P. nasutus appear to be closely related to one another; based on the results of generalized-parsimony analysis, these three species may be most closely related to P. boylii. The relationship of P. gratus to other taxa is not well resolved. MtDNA data support the results of several allozymic analyses; however certain relationships proposed based on karyotypic analysis are not supported by either mtDNA or allozyme data.
