Abstract
Goodman's conception of the academy. The concept of the university as an academy of scholars is one that reaches back to the medieval period. Goodman (1962) captures the essence of such an academy in the following seven characteristics: (1) teaching and learning are a personal relation, being necessary for both the student and the teacher; (2) to their students, teachers are veterans who have demonstrated the way of learning in the world and prove it can be done; (3) the guild, whether of students or masters, is the home and community of its members; (4) the academy is an international community, but it is also tightly local and moderate in size; (5) specialization, when it takes place, occurs in a community of general studies, a little city; (6) universalist responsibility and spiritual freedom are accompanied by playful experimentation and occasional excesses of dissent; and, (7) the community of scholars, including students, is self-governing and never ceases to regard itself as such. Goodman believes that most colleges and universities have strayed from this vision of an academy of scholars and that the prospects for significant reform to restore this vision are dim.
